Can summer heat affect chronic kidney disease?

Outdoor temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) can cause significant problems when kidney function is already impaired. Heat can quietly lead to dehydration, lower-than-usual blood pressure, and a decline in kidney function.
Many metabolic systems begin to slow down and change in response to heat, and the decline in kidney function is part of these processes. Risk factors such as heart failure and damaged blood vessels contribute to the onset of kidney failure during episodes of severe heat stroke. It's advisable to consult a specialist if you need to take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs during the hottest days of the year, as this can lead to acute kidney failure.

Dialysis in the summer. What to watch out for:

  1. Protect your vascular access if you go to the beach or swimming:
    Dialysis patients should always remember to cover their vascular access with a protective, waterproof dressing when getting wet or swimming. Talk to your nephrologist about the right dressing or tape material that holds up best in water. Make sure you understand the process, and don't hesitate to ask again if you need help applying the dressing properly. If you're a peritoneal dialysis patient, your dialysis center team will also show you how to properly secure and fasten your peritoneal dialysis catheter.
    2. Keep a close eye on your fluid balance:
    It's harder for dialysis patients to stick to their fluid intake restrictions during the hot summer months. It's important not to become dehydrated, but it's equally important not to overload on fluids. Be careful with ice-cold drinks, which can cause stomach cramps. It's best to avoid drinking large amounts of caffeine, alcohol, or sugary drinks, as these can cause your body to lose even more fluid. It helps to weigh yourself daily on a scale. Try to stay cool by wearing a hat or a wet bandana around your neck, which can help keep thirst in check.
    3. Wear sunglasses:
    Sunglasses protect your eyes the same way sunscreen protects your skin from harmful sunburn. Your sunglasses should block as much UVB and UVA radiation as possible. Sunglasses that fully cover the eyes and the surrounding area are best for avoiding sun damage. The eyes are the only place where blood is directly exposed to sunlight.
    4. Protect your skin from sun exposure:
    Every patient with chronic kidney disease or on dialysis should use sunscreen and apply it generously. Unprotected sun exposure can cause skin damage and irritation, burns, and in extreme cases even skin cancer. Use sunscreen products with a high SPF.
    Remember to reapply your sunscreen every few hours, as well as immediately after swimming or exercising. You can also protect your skin from strong sun by wearing a lightweight shirt, a hat, or seeking out shade.
    5. Get outside and stay active:
    Many patients with chronic kidney disease, as well as dialysis patients, avoid going outside during summer days because they're worried about the effects of heat on their health. Early mornings or late afternoons in summer are great times for a walk. Even if you sometimes feel tired, easy, gentle exercise can help you feel better. Please consult your nephrologist before starting a summer exercise routine.
