It is recommended that you carry an ID card, passport or other proof of identity so that our team can correctly fill in the medical documentation.
Should you have documents from previous medical examinations, laboratory results, hospital visits etc., please have those ready. Chronologically sorted documents will be appreciated by our medical team.

Generally, there is no special preparation necessary for a nephrological examination. Still, please note the following general guidelines:
• It is recommended that the day before examination you do not eat food that generates a lot of gases (like beans, lentils etc.). In case of ultrasound examination of the abdomen build-up gases obstruct the image and make diagnostics more difficult.
• It is helpful to begin the examination with a full bladder. This facilitates ultrasound diagnostics and, if necessary, allows for measurement of residual urine.

• When you face kidney problems for the first time it might be that you don’t have any results from laboratory tests and don’t even know which laboratory tests to do. You can always come to the booked medical examination without test results. During the examination and depending on your physical condition the doctor will prepare a custom list of laboratory and other tests which you can do.
• You can also turn to your family doctor (general practitioner), who will advise you on a list of common laboratory tests to prepare for a specialized medical examination by a nephrologist. Many key laboratory results will be ready within a day.
• If you are visiting a nephrologist regularly, to keep track of a specific and already diagnosed medical condition, you can have a look at the medical documentation from your last check-up and redo the same laboratory tests for the upcoming appointment.

As certain diseases progress, irreversible changes occur in the kidneys, and they are no longer able to fully perform their role of filtering and eliminating various waste products from the body. Hemodialysis is a treatment method that largely replaces kidney function and helps sustain human life. During the procedure, part of the patient's blood is drawn out of the body, filtered of toxins and other unwanted substances in a complex filter called a dialyzer, and then returned to the patient. The procedure is usually carried out three or four times a week at the dialysis center. Within the city of Varna, transportation is provided for each session, from the patient's home to the center and back.

Peritoneal dialysis is a treatment method, which similar to hemodialysis, replaces or supports the residual function of the kidneys. The filtering of blood takes place inside the patient’s body through the lining of the abdomen or belly. The procedure is done at home after thorough training at the dialysis center. On a daily basis and depending on the doctor’s prescription, the patient infuses a specific amount of special dialysis fluid into the belly which pulls out toxins and excess water from the body. After several hours inside the body, the dialysis fluid is drained and replaced. In this manner the clearance of toxins takes place without interruption throughout the day. The patient visits the dialysis center usually once a month for a routine medical examination and peritoneal dialysis consumables. Additionally, patients can always contact the medical team at the dialysis center in case of questions, complications and problems.
